CRANEY ISLAND
FUEL TERMINAL

The Project

Craney Island Fuel Terminal

Lee Composites supplied eleven 16” diameter FRP marine pilings 95’ long for the Center Mooring Fender, which is part of the US Navy Fuel Pier D replacement, at the Craney Island Fuel Terminal in Portsmouth, Virginia. A 4” filament wound collar was added to the pile as a stop for the HDPE sleeves, installed after the pile driving. The HDPE sleeves were added to help with abrasion from the ships during docking. Without any mechanical connection, the 20’ 5” sleeve is allowed to rotate freely around the pile while the smaller 1’ 4” is placed behind the U-Bolt that attaches to the top of the concrete mooring structure.
